Innovative Student Project Contributes to Healthcare Ecosystem
Students from Lokman Hekim Üniversitesi achieved notable success in the TÜSEB 2026-A1 “Strong Step Towards a Productive Healthcare Ecosystem for Undergraduate Students” Project Competition, organized by the Turkish Health Institutes Presidency.
Supervised by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Semih Çalamak, the project titled “Development and In Vitro Characterization of Graphite-Reinforced Metformin-Loaded Alginate Microspheres for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome” was recognized for its scientific merit and innovative approach.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration Among Students
The project was led by Pharmacy student Eslem Sena Aykan and included researchers Fatma Bilge Işılak from the Faculty of Pharmacy and Seher İrem Aksakal and Eray Yıldırım from the Faculty of Medicine.
Bringing together students from different disciplines, the study highlighted the importance of collaborative and research-oriented education in health sciences.
A Novel Approach to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Treatment
The project focused on developing graphite-enhanced alginate microspheres loaded with metformin to improve therapeutic strategies for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). The study also included comprehensive in vitro characterization processes to evaluate the properties of the developed system.
With its innovative approach combining biomaterials and drug delivery technologies, the project offers promising perspectives for future research in pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences.

The TÜSEB undergraduate project competition aims to encourage young researchers to actively engage in scientific inquiry and transform innovative ideas into practical solutions.
