Hamza Mesut Ağır, a 24-year-old medical student at Lokman Hekim University Faculty of Medicine who lives with osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease), has turned his dream of becoming a doctor into reality despite all the challenges.
Hamza, who was frequently treated in hospitals during his childhood, developed a desire to become a doctor during this time, and today, as an intern in the 6th year of our Faculty of Medicine, he is one step closer to his dream. Overcoming the physical obstacles and prejudices he encountered on his educational journey with his determination, Hamza received his greatest support from his mother, who was by his side every day.
Hamza Mesut Ağır states that the greatest gain from his experiences has been learning “empathy”:
“The days I spent in hospitals as a child have made it easier for me to connect with people today. I want to specialize in psychiatry and, in particular, show people with disabilities that ‘success is possible.’”
Hamza says that his mother was his greatest strength during his education and that their struggle together shaped his life. His mother, Hatice Ağır, says she watched her son put on his white coat with great pride and calls on families in similar situations to “never give up.”
Dr. Barış Ecevit Yüksel, Chief Physician at Lokman Hekim University Ankara Hospital, also stated that our university has made special arrangements to support the education process of students with disabilities, saying, "We have removed all barriers for students with visual, hearing, and physical disabilities, ensuring they have easy access to all areas. Hamza's educational journey is the most concrete example of this."
As Lokman Hekim University, we provide equal opportunities for all our students to achieve their dreams; we believe that Hamza Mesut Ağır's determination and perseverance will inspire everyone.
