On 18 February 2026, Lokman Hekim University’s Opticianry Program carried out a social responsibility project in Doğanşehir, Malatya, in collaboration with the Malatya Businessmen’s Association.

As part of the initiative, vision screenings were conducted for students affected by the earthquake at Doğanşehir Science High School, and eyeglasses were provided to 97 students in need.

Academic Expertise in the Field

The project was led by Dr. Havva Sibel Kurt, Head of the Opticianry Program, and Specialist Optician Ercan Aktürk, accompanied by five program students.

Comprehensive vision screenings and refraction assessments were conducted on-site. Based on identified needs, appropriate corrective eyewear was supplied to the students. The initiative was designed not merely as a technical service, but as direct support contributing to students’ educational continuity.

Supporting Equal Access to Education

Uncorrected vision problems can negatively affect academic performance and learning engagement. This project aimed to provide tangible support to students in the post-earthquake recovery process, helping them continue their education under healthier conditions.

Through this initiative, 97 students gained improved visual access to their classroom activities.

Practical Training and Community Engagement

Beyond its social impact, the project also provided valuable hands-on experience for the Opticianry students involved. Participants had the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting, working directly with individuals in need.
