Current Health Issues Addressed with Interdisciplinary Approaches

The 1st Student Congress, organized by the Faculty of Health Sciences at Lokman Hekim University, was held online on November 13–14, 2025, with broad participation. The congress offered a rich academic program over two days, bringing together different health disciplines to share scientific perspectives.

Although the main theme for this year was “Management of Chronic Diseases”, the congress content was not limited to this topic alone. A wide variety of current health topics were addressed in accordance with evidence-based information in the fields of Nutrition and Dietetics, Speech and Language Therapy, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, Nursing, and Audiology.

Congress sessions were also broadcast live via Zoom and YouTube. Recordings of the broadcast sessions are available on YouTube.

Current Dietary Approaches Were Discussed in the Nutrition and Dietetics Sessions

In the first session on November 13, the scientific basis of ketogenic diets, intermittent fasting, gluten-free diets, high-protein nutrition, and popular diet trends was examined.

• Subtypes of ketogenic diets and their nutritional composition,

• Findings on the content of the carnivore diet and its long-term health effects,

• Clinical studies comparing intermittent fasting and calorie restriction for weight management,

• The relationship between alternative nutrition models and chronic disease risks ,

were evaluated in light of the current literature.

The talks emphasized the need to carefully distinguish between diet recommendations popularized on social media and scientific evidence.

Speech and Language Therapy Sessions: Aging, Swallowing Disorders, and Processes

In the Speech and Language Therapy sessions,

• Structural and functional changes in the aging voice,

• Language disorders in the geriatric population,

• Neurophysiological bases of swallowing disorders,

and other clinically important topics were discussed.

In addition, neuroscience-based explanations such as auditory processing, the functional organization of brain regions, and the neurological sources of emotions were among the notable topics of the sessions.

Women's Health Was Assessed Multidimensionally in Midwifery Sessions

In the Midwifery Department sessions, comprehensive presentations were made on protecting and strengthening women's health throughout the life cycle:

• Increasing fertility awareness,

• Preconception care and pre-pregnancy monitoring,

• Prenatal care processes,

• Birth and postpartum period management,

• Areas of use of digital technologies in women's health.

These sessions also addressed social dimensions such as the reflections of gender inequality in health and education and the effects of gender stereotypes in teaching materials and curricula.

Technology-Based Approaches Highlighted in Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sessions

Presentations in the field of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation included:

• Clinical effects of lower extremity robotic systems,

• Walking rehabilitation devices aimed at increasing functional mobility,

• Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality-based rehabilitation applications,

• Use of exergame methods in neurological disease groups,

shared along with current research data.

The presentations also included TÜBİTAK-supported projects; scientific aspects of VR–AR-based system development studies for the treatment of phantom limb syndrome after amputation were shared.

Nursing and Occupational Therapy Presentations: Systematic Analyses and Holistic Approaches

Presentations in the fields of Nursing and Occupational Therapy covered:

• Care processes for chronic diseases,

• Current interventions aimed at protecting public health,

• Approaches to holistically support individuals in physical, psychological, and social areas,

presented together with scientific research and clinical experience.

Interdisciplinary Contributions and Student Presentations Attracted Attention

The congress was enriched by presentations from academics from different universities in Turkey as well as undergraduate students. Students gave scientific presentations on a wide variety of topics, including chronic disease management, the effects of nutritional models, elderly health, women's health, and auditory and neurological processes.

Certificates of Participation Were Issued to Participants

Participation in the two-day congress was free, and all participants were issued a Digital Certificate of Participation. The conference created a productive environment for interaction with its academic diversity, interdisciplinary perspective, and current scientific content.

The Conference Organizing Committee thanked all academics and students who contributed to the event and stated that they aim to continue and further develop the conference in the coming years.
