Sports pharmacy encompasses the theoretical and practical applications of pharmaceutical science in providing preventive and protective healthcare services for athletes. It is considered a new specialization within the discipline of pharmacy, where specialized pharmacists are expected to provide consultancy services tailored to the needs of athletes, adhering to principles of rational drug use. Guiding athletes through the anti-doping process and assuming an educational role in preventing doping practices, whether intentional or unintentional, are important responsibilities in this field. A sports pharmacist enhances athlete health by increasing awareness of safe and evidence-based use of: a. Sports-specific medical and nutritional supplements through updated information. b. Reliable consultancy services regarding drug use and ergogenic aids in sports. c. Informing athletes about the use of soft orthopedic medical products for sports-related injuries. d. Planning treatment options with high efficacy and low side effects through specially formulated compounded prescriptions for athletes.

Lokman Hekim University Faculty of Pharmacy, with the aim of contributing to the development of the field of 'Sports Pharmacy', has initiated a 'Sports Pharmacy Training Program' under the Lokman Hekim University Continuing Education Center, consisting of 5 modules and approximately 50 hours of training, led by 30 expert instructors. The training was conducted in two separate periods with the participation of a total of 40 pharmacists. Additionally, the Faculty of Pharmacy at Lokman Hekim University has introduced an elective course titled 'Sports Pharmacy' in its curriculum as of the 2020-2021 academic year, which has been attended by 100 students to date. With the proliferation of courses on sports pharmacy within pharmacy faculties nationwide and its development as a specialization, it will be possible to train pharmacists worldwide who can provide consultancy services in athlete health and communicate effectively with athletes.
