  • Nutrition and Dietetic Doctorate Program

    General Information
    LHÜ (Lokman Hekim University) Institute of Medical Sciences, Nutrition and Dietetic Department Doctorate Program was opened during the 2020-2021 Academic Year. Acceptance of students has been started in the same year. In the Nutrition and Dietetic Doctorate Program, the education, application and research activities are delivered as one program under the “Nutrition and Dietetic Department”. Acquired Degree: Nutrition and Dietetic Doctorate Degree The course language is Turkish.
    Duration of Doctorate Program
    Total period (courses + thesis study) is eight half terms starting with the term when courses of doctorate program are delivered whether or not the student is enrolled in each term. Maximum period to complete the program is twelve half terms. Maximum period to successfully complete the credit courses is four half terms.
    Objectives of Program
    The nutrition and dietetic graduates with master’s degree are allowed to receive education at doctorate level. The objectives of this Program are to educate doctors of philosophy who are able to plan and execute new projects either independently or as a team, to interpret and publish the results, are suitable for interdisciplinary studies, to monitor ever-evolving scientific works, to conduct analyses with a broad and deep perspective, to achieve new synthesises, to produce new information to bring innovations into science, to adopt lifelong learning, to internalize professional ethical rules, to effectively use technological tools in their field, to have voice in setting and developing nutrition and health policies of the country, and to take charge in education programs.
    Program Qualifications (Acquirements)
    1. Informational Qualifications  
    • Ability to develop, deepen and achieve original definitions to bring innovations into their own filed on the basis of master’s degree qualifications; to effectively use the current and advanced information on the Nutrition and Dietetic; and to adopt original thinking and/or research at specialty level,
    • Ability to comprehend the interdisciplinary interaction associated with the Nutrition and Dietetic; to use new and complicated opinions to achieve original results by the use of information requiring expertise for analysis, synthesis and assessment.

    • Ability to assess and use new information on the Nutrition and Dietetic in a systematic manner,
    • Ability to develop a new idea, method, design and/or application to bring innovations to Nutrition and Dietetic, or implement a known idea, method, design and/or application in a new area, ability to research, comprehend, design, adapt and implement an original matter,
    • Ability to perform critical analysis, synthesis and assessment of new and complicated opinions,
    • To acquire higher skills to use the research methods for the studies relating to own field.

    • Ability to develop a new idea, method, design and/or application to bring innovations to Nutrition and Dietetic, or implement a known idea, method, design and/or application in a new area in order to contribute to progression in own field by executing an original study independently,
    • To expand the boundaries of relevant information by publishing minimum one scientific article regarding the Nutrition and Dietetic on the national / international peer-reviewed journals and/or producing or interpreting an original work
    • To be a leader in any environment requiring solving the original and interdisciplinary problems.
      • Learning Qualifications
    • To develop new ideas and methods for the Nutrition and Dietetic by the use of superior intellectual processes such as creative and critical thinking, problem solving, and decision-making.
    Application to Program and Acceptance Conditions
    The candidates to apply to doctorate program are required to be a graduate of Nutrition and Dietetic department and have a postgraduate diploma with thesis from minimum one these departments: Nutrition and Dietetic, Dietetic, Nutrition Sciences, Community Nutrition and Collective Nutrition Systems. Turkish or foreign students who have completed a master’s degree program in foreign countries must have a certificate of equivalence or certificate of recognition issued by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK). The students are required to have a bachelor’s degree, achieve minimum 55 points on ALES as numerical score, achieve minimum 55 points on the central foreign language exams recognized by YÖK, or achieve an equivalent point on the international foreign language exams recognized as equivalent. The students who meet the required conditions must take the scientific assessment exam (written exam and/or interview). The students are accepted to doctorate program based on the final grade ranking, considering 50% of ALES scores, 20% of graduation grade point average and 30% of result of the scientific assessment conducted in writing and/or as interview. Based on the general final grade ranking, a number of students equal to vacant quota will be entitled to final enrolment in USA Doctorate Program for Nutrition and Dietetic of Institute of Medical Sciences. The general final grade will not be calculated for the candidates who do not take an interview and/or who are not able to achieve minimum 60/100 in the interview. Such candidates will be considered failed.
    Conditions for the Education Process:
    For the doctorate program, the students are required to receive minimum 7 credit courses equal to 120 ECTS. They must achieve 120 ECTS with seminar and thesis study and complete a total of 240 ECTS during the doctorate program. Courses of doctorate program must be successfully completed in maximum two years with grade point average of minimum 3.00. Students with grade point average less than 3.00 will be considered failed and will not be allowed to take the doctorate qualification exam.
    Qualification Exam
    It is conducted to assess the student who has completed the courses and seminar whether they comprehend the basic subjects and concepts and have a scientific research deepness regarding doctorate study. A student may take maximum two qualification exams in one year. Students must take the qualification exam until the end of the fifth half term at the latest. To take the Doctorate Qualification Exam, students must get 60 out of 100 on the central foreign language exams recognized by YÖK, or get a point on the international foreign language exams deemed equivalent by ÖSYM. Students who fail in the foreign language exam will be dismissed from the University. Students who fail in the Doctorate Qualification Exam will take the exam again in the next half term. If they fail again in this exam, they will be discharged from the doctorate program. Students who pass the doctorate qualification exam will verbally defend thesis proposal before the Thesis Monitoring Committee (TİK) within maximum six months.
     Thesis Monitoring Committee (TİK)
    It is obliged to approve the thesis proposal of students and monitor the doctorate thesis study process afterwards. Students carry out the doctorate thesis study based on the recommendations and corrections of TİK.
    Thesis Defence, Graduation
    Students who complete thesis study will take the thesis defence exam. Students who successfully defend their thesis before a selected jury will be entitled to assuming the title of “Doctor of Philosophy”. For a student enrolled in the doctorate program to be graduated from the program, they must meet the conditions set out in the Postgraduate Education and Exam Regulation of Lokman Hekim University.

    Application and research activities are carried out on the relevant matters and primary information is provided in line with the academic objectives.  
     Employment Opportunities
    Students who complete the Nutrition and Dietetic Doctorate Program may work as an academic member with doctor’s degree in a higher education institution. They may also work as clinical dietitian or executive dietitian in hospitals, executive dietitian in various public agencies and organizations, or public health dietitian and individual diet counsellor in food industry, and Dr Dietitian in education centres, sports halls, etc.
    Transfer to Upper Programs
    Students who complete the Nutrition and Dietetic Doctorate Program may apply for readership if they meet the other required conditions.
    Assessment and Evaluation
    The students receive a course final grade for each course at the end of the half-term. The course final grade is calculated by assessment of success achieved by the student during the half-term (mid-term exams, assignments, applied studies, projects, laboratory and similar activities) and general exam together. The Postgraduate Education and Exam Regulation of Lokman Hekim University shall apply to any educational study of students and giving marks to tests.
    Study Type
    Study type is full-time. When necessary, courses and exams may be taken after the end of working hours during the week and/or on the Saturday and Sunday.
