

Midwifery Master Program (with Thesis)
General Information
Midwifery Master's Program is one of the specialty areas of the Department of Midwifery. As defined in the regulation, an expert midwife is a midwife who has received postgraduate education in the midwifery department. The Master's Program in Midwifery was opened on 08.12.2021 according to the decision of the Executive Board of YÖK. Although the language of instruction of the program is Turkish, foreign language (English) resources are also used in the education process. The program is carried out by faculty members who are experts in the field of Midwifery. An average of 10 students are accepted to the program each year.

Admission and Registration Requirements
Student applications to the proposed program, entrance exams (written / interview), calculation of the general success score and placement of students are made in accordance with the Lokman Hekim University Institute of Health Sciences Graduate Education and Training Directive. In addition, before each application period, with the recommendation of the relevant department and the decision of the institute board of directors, the special conditions, entrance exam place and date are determined and announced before the application.
Students who graduated from the midwifery department of the faculty of health sciences and the midwifery department of the school of health, which provide 4-year education, can apply to the proposed program. Turkish or foreign students who have graduated from undergraduate programs in foreign countries must have a certificate of equivalence or recognition from the Council of Higher Education (YÖK).
For applications to the proposed program, it is necessary to have ALES (SAY/EA) score to be determined by the Institute Board, provided that it is not less than 55.
Students who meet the application requirements are taken to the scientific evaluation exam (written and/or interview).
The calculation of the overall success grade is made by taking into account the ALES score, undergraduate graduation grade point average and the results of the scientific evaluation exam. According to the general success grade ranking, the student is entitled to final registration within the quota specified.

Qualification Requirements and Rules
In order to graduate from the Midwifery Master's Program with Thesis, the student must complete at least 21 credits and 120 ECTS (at least seven courses, seminar course and thesis study). Seminar course and thesis study are non-credit and are evaluated as pass/fail. Students who transfer from another program or take courses as a special student must take more than half of the total credits required to be taken in the current program while transferring the credits of the courses they take. If the advisor deems appropriate and necessary, courses from other programs can also be selected. The evaluation of the students' course success is based on the 'Lokman Hekim University Graduate Education and Examination Regulations'.
Purpose of the Program
The aim of the midwifery master's program is to train midwives who can apply advanced expertise knowledge and skills to protect and improve women's and children's health in particular and family and community health in general. In line with this aim, students who graduate from the program are expected to develop basic qualities such as research, critical and analytical thinking, problem solving, independent decision making, following current scientific knowledge and technology, taking responsibility and accountability, leadership, professional values and ethical sensitivity.
Program Qualifications (Outcomes)
Program competencies are formed from 11 basic areas in the EQEP (Midwifery National Core Education Program, 2016);
- Midwives have the necessary knowledge and skills in obstetrics, gynecology, neonatology, social sciences, public health and ethics in order to provide quality, culturally sensitive services to women, newborns, children and families.
- Midwives provide culturally sensitive and quality health education and services to the community to support healthy family life, planned pregnancies and positive parenting.
- Midwives perform regular monitoring and follow-up to protect, maintain and improve health during pregnancy. They provide quality antenatal care, including early identification of risks, continuation of treatment and referral of pregnant women at risk.
- Midwives provide culturally sensitive, quality service in trauma and labor (during birth), and provide a safe environment under hygienic conditions. They deliver under their own responsibility and take appropriate approach in emergency and risky situations.
- Midwives provide comprehensive and quality postpartum care. It provides adaptation to the postpartum period in an approach sensitive to cultural differences for women and their families.
- Midwives have the necessary knowledge and skills to provide qualified neonatal care for healthy babies after birth.
- Midwives provide individualized, culturally sensitive services in accordance with national protocols in case of termination or loss of pregnancy.
- Midwives continue their continuing education activities related to their field before and after graduation.
- Midwives participate in research on issues related to their field, take part in projects and work for the realization of evidence-based research results.
- Midwives provide counseling to women and families in the areas they serve.
- Midwives can organize in every field where they are with women.
Employment Opportunities
Students who graduate from the midwifery master's program can work as a specialist clinical midwife, responsible midwife, manager midwife, midwife in the education unit in the gynecology and obstetrics clinics of public or private health institutions. In addition, they can work in Private Pregnancy Education Classes or Childbirth Preparation Classes and Family Health Centers. They also have a high chance of working in academic staff in the Midwifery departments of the Faculty of Health Sciences of universities. Midwifery departments also have a high chance of working in academic positions in Nursing Faculties.
Access to Higher Degree Programs
Students who graduate from the Midwifery Master's program with thesis can apply to doctoral programs when they meet the other necessary conditions.
Measurement and Evaluation
Students are given a course success grade for each course at the end of the semester in which they are enrolled. The course success grade is obtained by evaluating the success of the student during the semester (midterm exams, homework, applied studies, projects, laboratories and similar studies) and the general exam together. Program courses must be successfully completed in a maximum of two years with a GPA of at least 2.50.
Graduation Requirements
In order for the student to graduate from the Midwifery Master's program with thesis, he / she must have succeeded in all the courses in the program, provide a minimum of 120 ECTS credits, and have a GPA of at least 2.50 out of 4.00. After completing the courses, a student in the master's program with thesis is obliged to prepare a thesis related to his/her field, to write the results of his/her thesis in accordance with the thesis writing rules of the institute and to defend his/her thesis orally in front of the jury. The student's graduation date is the date of the thesis exam in which the master's thesis is accepted.
Mode of Study
The mode of operation is full time. If necessary, courses and exams can be held after the end of working hours on weekdays and/or on Saturdays and Sundays.
