Programme Overview

The PhD Programme in Histology and Embryology at Lokman Hekim University was established by a decision of the Higher Education Executive Board dated 22 February 2023. The standard duration of study is four years, and the language of instruction is Turkish. The programme offers an advanced research platform dedicated to examining the micro-anatomical structure of cells and tissues (Histology) and the developmental processes of organisms (Embryology) from a holistic perspective.

Degree Awarded

Graduates who successfully complete the programme requirements are awarded the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Histology and Embryology.

Admission and Registration Requirements

Applications, entrance examinations (written examination and/or interview), evaluation procedures, and student placement are carried out in accordance with the Graduate Education Directive of the Institute of Health Sciences at Lokman Hekim University. Prior to each admission cycle, the relevant Department proposes programme-specific requirements, and the Institute Administrative Board announces the examination format, venue, and schedule in advance.

Eligible applicants include:

  • Graduates of the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, or Faculty of Veterinary Medicine whose qualifications are deemed appropriate upon the recommendation of the Department Academic Board and approval of the Institute Board, and

  • Candidates who have completed a master’s degree in Histology and Embryology within a Faculty of Medicine.

Applicants who completed a degree abroad must hold an official recognition or equivalence certificate issued by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK).

Candidates are required to obtain:

  • A minimum score of 55 in the ALES examination (Quantitative or Equally Weighted), as determined by the Institute, and

  • A minimum score of 55 in a recognised foreign language examination taken in a language other than the applicant’s native language, from exams accepted by the Council of Higher Education or equivalent international exams recognised by ÖSYM.

Applicants who meet the eligibility criteria are invited to a scientific assessment, consisting of a written examination and/or an interview. Final ranking is based on a composite evaluation of ALES score, foreign language proficiency, graduation grade point average, and scientific assessment performance, within the announced quota.

Recognition of prior learning is regulated in accordance with the Lokman Hekim University Graduate Education Regulation.

Programme Objectives

The programme aims to educate researchers who can address key challenges in histology and embryology through a holistic and evidence-based perspective, access and critically evaluate scientific knowledge, integrate research findings to develop solutions, and apply advanced research methodologies to generate high-level evidence.

Graduates are expected to translate new knowledge into practice and contribute effectively to academic and educational activities in the field.

Programme Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates will be able to:

  • Conduct scientific research in histology and embryology and access knowledge in depth, critically evaluate evidence, and apply findings in practice.

  • Integrate knowledge from different disciplines relevant to histology and embryology.

  • Identify field-specific problems, develop solution-oriented methods, and apply research outcomes effectively.

  • Develop innovative and original ideas and methodologies.

  • Access existing scientific knowledge, interpret it critically, and use it effectively.

  • Follow emerging practices and apply and teach them when appropriate.

  • Conduct independent research to generate evidence that supports practice.

  • Communicate scientific outputs clearly and systematically in national and international settings, both orally and in writing.

  • Demonstrate leadership within healthcare teams, develop approaches for complex situations, and take responsibility.

  • Act in accordance with ethical and professional principles across education, practice, and research.

Programme Structure, Credits and ECTS

To be awarded the PhD degree, students must complete at least 240 ECTS, including a minimum of 21 national credits. The programme comprises at least seven courses, a seminar, the doctoral qualifying examination, a thesis proposal, and the doctoral thesis. The curriculum includes compulsory and elective courses.

Academic Regulations and Progression Rules

  • The standard completion period is eight semesters (four years) and may be extended up to twelve semesters.
  • Doctoral coursework must be completed within a maximum of two years with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00. Students who successfully complete coursework and meet the GPA requirement become eligible to take the doctoral qualifying examination.
  • Eligibility for the qualifying examination also requires a minimum score of 60 out of 100 in a recognised foreign language exam accepted by the Council of Higher Education or an equivalent score from international exams recognised by ÖSYM.
  • Following successful completion of the qualifying examination, a Thesis Monitoring Committee (TMC) is appointed within one month. The student must defend a thesis proposal before the committee within six months. During the thesis period, the student is required to submit at least three TMC reports.
  • The thesis defence consists of a presentation of the thesis followed by a question-and-answer session. Students whose theses are accepted are considered successful.

Assessment and Evaluation

Assessment and grading of all coursework and examinations are conducted in accordance with the Lokman Hekim University Graduate Education and Training Regulations.

Graduation Requirements

To graduate from the programme, students must:

  • Successfully complete all required courses,

  • Complete at least 240 ECTS,

  • Achieve a minimum GPA of 3.00 out of 4.00,

  • Pass the doctoral qualifying examination, and

  • Complete and defend an original doctoral thesis before an academic jury.

Following the defence, the jury decides by absolute majority to accept, reject, or request revisions. The official graduation date is the date of the successful thesis defence.

Further Study Opportunities (Doctoral/PhD)

Graduates who meet the required academic criteria may pursue academic career pathways, including eligibility to apply for the national associate professorship process in the relevant field.

Career Prospects

Graduates may work as academic staff at universities and take roles in public or private sector research and development units. With the relevant certification issued by the Ministry of Health, graduates may also work in assisted reproductive technology centres.

Mode of Study and Class Timetable

The programme is offered on a full-time basis. When necessary, courses and examinations may be scheduled outside standard working hours on weekdays or at weekends.
