Lokman Hekim University Faculty of Health Sciences Department of Nursing Public Health Nursing course was conducted in Sincan and Mamak districts during the 2024-2025 Spring semester. As part of the course, third-year nursing students worked at Hanım Konakları/Güngörmüşler Konakları, affiliated with Sincan Municipality, from February 24 to June 2, 2025, on Mondays, while fourth-year nursing students completed their practical training at the Family Centers affiliated with the Mamak Municipality from March 18 to June 3, 2025, on Mondays and Tuesdays. The course was coordinated by Lecturer Nurbanu ODACI, with the participation of Asst. Dr. Kadriye DEMİR, Asst. Dr. Esra TÜRKER, Research Assistant Hilal Merve BELEN, and Mentor Specialist Nurse Feyza KOCAKURT, with a total of 101 students (49+52) at 15 centers. During the implementation period, health education programs were conducted simultaneously at all centers for individuals and groups. At the same time, health screenings for cardiovascular disease risk factors were conducted at all centers during specific time periods. As part of these screenings, students conducted cardiovascular disease risk factor screenings (blood sugar, blood pressure, height, body weight, and waist circumference measurements) for adults at the centers.

Sincan Region Screening Results

In the Sincan region, 641 people over the age of 18 who agreed to participate in the screening were screened for cardiovascular disease risk factors. Of the participants, 16.1% reported smoking, 44.1% reported consuming more than 5 grams of salt per day of salt per day, 52.6% consumed less than 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day, 46.3% engaged in less than 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week, and only 25.5% reported rarely or never feeling stressed. When examining data on individuals' use of healthcare services, 77.4% reported that they most frequently sought healthcare services for curative purposes. When participants were analyzed based on body mass index, approximately 58.7% of the population was found to be obese, 30.4% overweight, 10.6% normal weight, and 0.3% underweight. Among the 589 participants aged 40–75, 28.6% were classified as having a high-risk level according to the WHO non-laboratory-based cardiovascular disease risk chart. Approximately 19.8% of participants were referred to a healthcare facility based on their blood sugar levels, 21.4% based on their blood pressure levels, and 66.1% based on their body mass index or waist circumference.

Mamak Region Screening Results

In the Mamak region, 927 individuals aged 18 and older who agreed to participate in the screening were screened for cardiovascular disease risk factors. 27.0% of participants reported smoking, 43.6% reported consuming more than 5 grams of salt per day of salt per day, 63.6% consumed less than 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day, 33.6% engaged in less than 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week, and only 13.6% reported rarely or never feeling stressed. When examining data on individuals' use of healthcare services, 80.6% reported that they most frequently sought healthcare services for curative purposes. When participants were analyzed based on body mass index, approximately 45% of the population was found to be obese, 34% overweight, 19.6% normal weight, and 1.4% underweight. Among the 687 participants aged 40-75, 16.5% were found to be at high risk according to the WHO non-laboratory-based CVD risk chart. Approximately 22.4% of participants were referred to a healthcare facility based on their blood sugar levels, 25.6% based on their blood pressure levels, and 71% based on their body mass index or waist circumference.

Additionally, a cancer screening visit was conducted at the Necip Fazıl Family Center in collaboration with Altındağ KETEM for women. A total of 8 women participated in the screening. One of the participants was unable to undergo screening due to a disability and was referred to the hospital. Five participants underwent breast cancer screening, four underwent cervical cancer screening, and two underwent colorectal cancer screening. Three of the women who came for screening were sent a fecal occult blood test to be performed at home by their spouses.

Health Education Programs Conducted Within the Scope of the Application

During the application period, individual and group education programs on various topics were organized at all centers. Group education on “Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases” was provided at all centers.

Stakeholder Feedback

Written feedback on the course was received from the community and center managers. In both regions, the feedback showed that the participants found the screening useful, were satisfied with the program, and requested more comprehensive screenings (blood tests, examinations). In both regions, center managers stated that there were no negative aspects of the application, that they found it beneficial to public health, and that they wanted to host the application in subsequent years. In addition, field evaluations of the course application were collected anonymously from students via Google Forms. The form used consists of 12 items and is a 5-point Likert scale ranging from “strongly disagree” to “strongly agree.” There are no reverse items in the form, and the total score ranges from a minimum of 12 to a maximum of 60. Feedback was collected from 43 students in the Sincan region, with an average evaluation score of 45.9. Data was collected from 46 students in the Mamak region, with an average evaluation score of 53.4. When both scores are considered, it can be said that the students were quite satisfied with the course application.
