PHYSICAL EXERCISE, HEALTH AND SPORTS SCIENCE MASTER PROGRAM (WITH THESIS)
This program is designed for the knowledge, skills and expertise required for a career in physical activity, health and sports sciences. Physical Exercise, Health and Sports Science Master Program (With Thesis) is a field that emphasizes the importance of physical activity and nutrition in preventing disease and restoring health and fitness after illness. Thanks to this program, graduates who have received undergraduate education in different fields related to exercise / sports and health will have the opportunity to research innovations more by specializing in improving people’s lifestyles and preventing diseases by associating exercise with health, and will have the opportunity to transfer their knowledge and experience gained in this program. Physical Exercise, Health and Sports Science Master Program (With Thesis) was established by the decision of the Council of Higher Education dated 04.05.2020 and numbered E.29091. Although the language of instruction of the program is Turkish, foreign language (English) resources are also used in the education process. The program is carried out by faculty members who are experts in the fields of Physical Activity, Health and Sports Sciences.

Acceptance and Enrolment Conditions
The students are accepted to the Physical Exercise, Health and Sports Science Master Program (With Thesis) with written and / or verbal examination. The number of students to be admitted to the program and the qualifications required for prospective students are announced before the beginning of each term. In this announcement, the application conditions and the deadline, the place and date of the candidates are stated. Graduates of the Faculty of Sport Sciences / School of Physical Education and Sports (BESYO) Coaching education undergraduate programs, graduates of the Faculty of Health Sciences and other related faculty graduates with the recommendation of the Academic Board of the Department and those who have a bachelor’s degree approved by the Institute Board can apply. Turkish or foreign students who have completed their undergraduate program in foreign countries must have the equivalence or recognition document they will receive from the Higher Education Council (YÖK). In applications for master programs (with thesis), the score type of the applied program must not be less than 55 points, the Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam (ALES) score determined by the relevant Institute Board and the Central Foreign Language Exams or the international foreign language exams accepted by Student Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM). It is required to have a minimum base score for the foreign language determined by the head of the Departments and accepted by the Senate.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Having a Bachelor’s Degree Diploma from the Faculty of Sport Sciences / School of Physical Education and Sports Coaching education, having a Bachelor’s Degree Diploma approved by the Institute Board with the recommendation of the Academic Board of the Faculty of Health Sciences and other related faculty graduates
Qualification Conditions and Rules
Master program (With Thesis) consists of at least seven courses, a seminar course and a thesis study, with a total of not less than twenty credits. The seminar course and thesis work are non-credit and evaluated as successful or unsuccessful. The master program (With Thesis) consists of at least seven courses including the seminar course and a total of at least 120 ECTS credits, provided that it is not less than 60 ECTS credits per academic term. 1 ECTS is equivalent to 30 hours of workload. Even if the student has credit transfer courses, the student must receive at least half of the total credit required by the program to which he / she is affiliated, from his / her own program. If the advisor deems appropriate and necessary, courses from other programs can also be selected. Students must have their thesis study written in accordance with the ‘Health Sciences Institute’ Thesis Writing Guide. “Lokman Hekim University Regulation on Graduate Education and Training” is taken as a basis for the evaluation of students’ course success.
Aim of Program
Although moving life is inversely associated with obesity, various studies show that the beneficial effects of physical activity in terms of reducing risks for Chronic Diseases Act in a line independent of their effects on body weight and obesity. Some studies have shown that sedentary individuals who are not physically active at normal weight have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease than overweight physically active individuals. Obesity, one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood, is a serious health problem affecting approximately 25 % – 30 % of children and adolescents. Obesity is at an alarming level in this age pyramid and continues to increase from year to year. All kinds of social, ethnic, gender, etc. Although it is separate from the parameter, the main universal factor that causes obesity is the deterioration of the energy intake and consumption balance due to increased intake, decreased consumption, or both. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) data, half of all adults and one fifth of children in the European region have above normal body weights. Although one third of these children are obese, the numbers are also increasing. Obesity is an energy metabolism disorder that occurs with excessive fat storage in the organism and can cause physical and mental problems. In addition, numerous risky diseases such as metabolic, cardiovascular, orthopaedic, neurological, hepatic, respiratory and kidney problems are also caused by overweight and obesity. Getting more energy than wasted is the most important cause of obesity. Changes in nutrition and physical activity habits cause obesity to occur more frequently. The aim of the Physical Activity, Health and Sport Sciences Master Program (With Thesis) under the Faculty of Sport Sciences, Department of Sports Sciences is to reveal the importance of active life in the prevention of obesity and related metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, which are closely related to the health of the society, and within this framework, it provides individuals and society with a healthy and fit life. To train sports scientists who can apply the exercise practices that will bring them gain with their expertise and skills, have a high level of awareness and concentration, closely follow current developments and constantly renew them.
Program Qualifications (Outcomes)
- Graduates can follow the theoretical and scientific developments in basic Assessment and Evaluation techniques specific to people who do physical activity and / or sports or athletes.
- Graduates critically evaluate and integrate information from different disciplines by using theoretical and applied concepts and principles about physical activity, health and sports sciences, and create new knowledge.
- Graduates plan research, take part in projects, interpret the results of their studies by choosing appropriate statistical methods, write reports, present and publish them in scientific meetings.
- Graduates have the technological knowledge and equipment required by the fields of physical activity, health and sports sciences.
- Graduates know scientific research methods in the field of physical activity, health and sports sciences.
Students who graduate from Physical Exercise, Health and Sports Science Master Program (With Thesis) can work in sports centres such as public or private health and fitness enterprises, private schools, tourism sector, individual sports consultancy, academic progress. In addition, they can have the opportunity to work in academic staff at the Sports Sciences Faculties of universities. Being a graduate, also gives the student the right to continue his doctoral education if he meets other relevant conditions.
Transition to Higher Degree Programs
Students who graduate from the Physical Exercise, Health and Sports Science Master Program (With Thesis) can apply to doctoral programs when they meet the other required conditions.
Assessment and Evaluation
Course success grade is given to students for each course at the end of the term they are enrolled. Course success grade is obtained by evaluating the success of the student during the term (midterm examinations, homework, applied studies, projects, laboratory, and similar studies) and the general examination. Program courses must be successfully completed in two years at most, with a minimum GPA of 2.50.
In order for a student to graduate from the Physical Exercise, Health and Sports Science Master program (with Thesis), the student must have completed all the courses in the program, must meet a minimum of 120 ECTS credits, and have a GPA of at least 2.50 out of 4.00. In a master program (With Thesis), a student has to prepare a thesis related to his / her field, write the results of his / her thesis in accordance with the institute’s thesis writing rules and defend his / her thesis verbally before the jury. The graduation date of the student is the date of the thesis exam in which the master thesis is accepted.
Program courses must be successfully completed in two years at most, with a minimum GPA of 2.50.
