Department Introduction
Education and Early Professional Development
The Department of Midwifery at Lokman Hekim University is committed to educating contemporary midwives equipped with scientific knowledge, professional competence, and strong ethical values, aligned with international standards. Through advanced simulation laboratories at the Vital Simulation Center and comprehensive clinical placements, students are provided with opportunities to translate theoretical learning into professional practice. International mobility programs, including Erasmus exchanges, further support global academic and clinical exposure.
Midwifery is defined by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) as a profession in which practitioners provide essential care, support, and counseling to women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, conduct births on their own responsibility, and care for the newborn. Beyond maternal and neonatal health, midwifery encompasses lifelong health advocacy, education, and counseling for women, families, and communities.
Academic Experience at Lokman Hekim University
The program integrates foundational medical sciences, behavioral and social sciences, and discipline-specific midwifery education within a structured academic framework. Students receive theoretical instruction, laboratory practice, and supervised clinical training in areas including obstetrics, neonatal health, public health, mental health, and reproductive health.
Simulation-based education allows students to practice antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care in realistic learning environments before entering clinical placements. The university’s healthcare partnerships ensure structured field experience in both public and private institutions.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the Midwifery program pursue careers in public and private hospitals, community health centers, family health centers, delivery units, and neonatal care units. They actively participate in high-risk pregnancy monitoring, reproductive health services, and public health initiatives.
Midwives may also practice independently in accordance with national regulations, establish childbirth education centers, and provide consultancy and training services. Those interested in academic pathways may continue to master’s and doctoral programs to specialize in areas such as perinatology, women’s health, and neonatal care.
Curriculum Structure
The curriculum combines core medical sciences with midwifery-specific theoretical and clinical coursework. Students develop competence in maternal and newborn health, reproductive health, and community-based care models. Professional ethics, communication, and evidence-based practice are embedded throughout the program to ensure responsible and patient-centered care.
Practical skill development is emphasized through laboratory simulations and structured clinical internships, enabling students to integrate theoretical knowledge with hands-on clinical decision-making.
Double Major and Minor Opportunities
The university encourages interdisciplinary development through minors and double majors across relevant departments. Students in the Department of Midwifery may pursue minor studies in Nutrition and Dietetics, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, and Nursing. There is currently no double major option available within the program.
Postgraduate and Academic Advancement
Graduates may pursue advanced degrees in midwifery and related health sciences. Specialization areas include perinatology, women’s health, neonatal care, and community-based maternal health services. Academic and research-oriented career pathways are supported through graduate education.
Erasmus and International Mobility
Lokman Hekim University has participated in the Erasmus mobility framework since 2020 under the coordination of the Turkish National Agency. The university maintains bilateral agreements with institutions across Europe and selected partner countries beyond the European Union. Students may benefit from study and traineeship mobility opportunities in accordance with published calls and eligibility criteria. The university also holds the European Solidarity Corps quality label.
Internship and Clinical Practice
Clinical practice is a core component of the program. Students complete supervised internships in affiliated public and private healthcare institutions, gaining experience in antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care. Simulation-based laboratories replicate real patient-care environments, allowing students to build clinical confidence before engaging in direct patient interaction.
Laboratory and Simulation Infrastructure
The program benefits from fully equipped skills laboratories located at the C Block Campus. Within the Vital Simulation Center, dedicated obstetrics and maternal care units allow students to practice clinical scenarios using advanced simulation technologies. Access to interdisciplinary labs further strengthens clinical readiness and professional skills.
Entrepreneurship and Professional Independence
Graduates may establish independent midwifery practices, provide childbirth education and counseling services, and engage in community-based maternal health initiatives where legally permitted. Through LHUSTEK (Health and Pharmaceutical Technology Center), the university supports innovation, professional development, and entrepreneurship in healthcare fields.
