Who is a Midwife?

Midwife is a health professional who provides follow-up, care, counseling and education in order to improve, protect, maintain and treat the health of mothers and babies during pregnancy, birth and postpartum period, performs normal deliveries, can apply episiotomy procedure when necessary, carries out reproductive health and family planning services, performs follow-up of children aged 0-6 years and contributes to the improvement of women, children, family and community health and plays an important role in reducing maternal and infant mortality.

What are the working areas of graduates of the Department of Midwifery?

Midwives can work in institutions and organizations such as public, university and private hospitals, family health centers, maternal and child health and family planning centers, community health centers, infertility centers, pregnancy education centers, or they can work freelance. In addition, there are master's and doctorate opportunities after undergraduate education in the midwifery department and they can work as academicians.

What are the courses of the Department of Midwifery?

In Lokman Hekim University Midwifery Department, basic medical, behavioral and social sciences courses as well as basic vocational courses are given. Especially vocational courses are carried out as theoretical, laboratory practice and clinical practice. Basic vocational courses; Basic Practices in Midwifery, Introduction to Midwifery, Healthy Pregnancy and Care, Risky Pregnancy and Care, Healthy Birth and Postpartum Period, Risky Birth and Postpartum Period, Reproductive Health and Family Planning, Neonatal and Child Health Diseases, Gynecology and Care courses. In addition to the theoretical education of our courses, our university has a comprehensive application laboratory for application courses. In addition, our university has 3 hospitals for clinical applications of our students. In addition, an interdisciplinary education is provided with various elective courses to be offered throughout undergraduate education.

Is there a compulsory clinical practice/internship in the Department of Midwifery?

In the undergraduate curriculum of the Department of Midwifery, in-semester clinical practices are compulsory from the 1st grade. There is also a compulsory summer internship in the 3rd grade.

Which score type does the Department of Midwifery take students?

Midwifery accepts students with numerical score type (MF 3). For midwifery, it is necessary to take the TYT Exam, which is the first session. After taking the TYT exam, the 'Mathematics and Science' fields must be solved in the AYT Exam, which is the 2nd Session.

Is postgraduate education available?

Graduate applications can be made to the Departments of Midwifery and Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing. There are master's and doctorate programs in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing at our university.

What are the requirements to graduate from the Department of Midwifery?

In order to graduate from the midwifery undergraduate program, the student must have a GPA of at least 2.00, a total ECTS load of 240, take all compulsory and elective courses and be successful. Also all midwifery students before graduation;

  • 100% prenatal (prenatal/pregnancy) monitoring
  • 40 normal deliveries,
  • Actively participate in breech birth (If breech birth is not possible, it should be practiced by simulation)
  • 40% normal pregnancy follow-up,
  • Monitoring 40 women at risk during pregnancy, childbirth or the postpartum period
  • At least 100 puerperant follow-ups and healthy newborn follow-ups must be performed.

What is the title that graduates of the Department of Midwifery will receive?

Graduates receive the title of EBE.

Do students have to pass any exams in order to start working after graduation (such as getting a certificate, etc.)?

Graduated midwives can start working in private organizations or freelance. They do not have to be certified to start work. However, there are certificate programs that they can take to improve themselves. KPSS score is required for their appointment to state institutions. There is no problem with midwife employment in our country. Almost all graduated midwives start working as soon as they graduate.

What are the certificate programs that midwives can take after graduation?

In the last year of their four-year undergraduate education or later, they can receive certificates such as “Breast Milk and Breastfeeding Counseling”, “Birth Preparation Training” and “Prenatal Yoga and Pilates Instructor”, “Hpynobirthing”, “Neonatal Resuscitation Program”, “Akubası, Acupressure Applications” etc. for the fields they are interested in.

Can students of the Department of Midwifery do double major/minor?

Students of the Department of Midwifery of our university can minor in Nursing, Nutrition and Dietetics, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Departments.

How did you continue your education during Covid-19?

Our Atatürk's Principles and History of Turkish Revolution I-II, Turkish Language I-II and Information Technologies courses, which are currently carried out as compulsory common courses, were given via distance education system. During the pandemic process, all our theoretical courses met with our students via distance education system.
