Researcher/Author Identification Methods

Various problems may arise in the indexing of author names in publications appearing in international journals, such as spelling errors, character incompatibilities, or the existence of multiple researchers with the same name. For this reason, in addition to various citation indexes, some organizations have developed numbers for identifying author names. These numbers facilitate the seamless counting of all citations received by authors. There are various methods for achieving a standard in uniform author identification within the academic community. Some of these are as follows:

ResearcherID

The Web of Science citation index provides a ResearcherID number for each author. Authors can link all their publications to their ResearcherID and collect them in one place. This allows authors to easily access up-to-date citation analysis for their publications in Web of Science. Authors can register via the website to obtain a ResearcherID.

Scopus Author ID

The Scopus citation index creates a profile page for each author. These pages also contain identifying numbers for the author. Authors do not need to register to obtain a Scopus Author ID.

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID)

ORCID is a non-profit organization established by various organizations, publishing houses, and funding agencies. ORCID provides individual researchers with a free author identifier number. The ORCID number is also used in the Scopus citation index.

Publons

Publons is another platform that provides researchers with a standard number, enabling them to publish all their works using the same author code. Publons has been providing free services since 2017 and has a very simple registration interface. It also supports all the other ID-issuing organizations mentioned above. This allows it to provide the combination of them and collect all publications together, even if they have been entered with different addresses.

YÖK (Higher Education Council) Researcher Number

YÖK has assigned a researcher number to all academic staff working at universities in Turkey. This number, used as metadata in institutional archives, was developed to facilitate the collation of author information.
