Researcher/Author Identification Methods
Researcher/Author Identification Methods Various problems may arise in the indexing of author names in publications published in international journals due to spelling errors, character mismatches or the presence of more than one researcher with the same name. For this reason, in addition to various citation indexes, some organizations have developed numbers to identify author names. These numbers facilitate the smooth counting of all citations received by the authors. There are various methods of standardizing uniform author identification in the academic community. A few of these are as follows:
ResearcherID The Web of Science citation index provides a ResearcherID number for each author. Authors can associate all their publications with the ResearcherID and collect them in a single location. Thus, authors can easily access up-to-date citation analysis of their publications in Web of Science. Authors have the opportunity to obtain a ResearcherID by registering on the web page.
Scopus Author ID Scopus citation index creates a profile page for each author. These pages also contain the author's identifying numbers. Authors do not need to register to obtain a Scopus Author ID.
ORCHID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) ORCID is a non-profit organization established by various organizations, publishers and funders. ORCID provides individual researchers with an author identifier number free of charge. The ORCHID number is also used in the Scopus citation index.
Publons Publons is a platform that provides researchers with a standardized number and ensures that all publications are published with the same author code. Publons has been providing free service since 2017 and its registration interface is very simple. It also supports all the other ID issuing organizations above. In this way, it can provide the combination between them and collect them all together, even if the publications are entered with different addresses.
YÖK (Council of Higher Education) Researcher Number YÖK has assigned a researcher number to all academic staff working at universities in Turkey. This number, which is used as metadata information in institutional archives, has been developed to ensure the collation of author information.
